    Max Kelly was born in 1935 and grew up in Victoria. In 1971 he took up a lectureship at Macquarie University, Sydney. He was appointed associate professor in 1986. He taught economic and urban history with an emphasis on environmental conservation. He wrote and edited a number of books including 'Paddock Full of Houses: Paddington 1840-1880' (1978), 'Faces of the Street; William Street 1916' (1982) and 'Sydney, City of Suburbs' (1987). In 1975 he founded the Sydney History Group. He was also president of the National Trust (NSW) 1986-88, a member of the History Advisory Panel of the Heritage Council of NSW and founding president of the History Council of NSW. He died in 1996.
