  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Dr Christopher Allen has been an arts writer, critic, lecturer, curator, administrator and teacher. He was born in Algiers of Australian parents and educated in Vietnam, Japan, France and Australia. In 1975 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (French) (First-Class Honours, University Medal), from the University of New South Wales. In 1977 he studied for his Maitrise es Lettres at the University of Aix-en-Provence, and in 1992 he completed his PhD at the University of Sydney. He was art critic for The Sydney Morning Herald (1988-1991) and The Australian Financial Review (2005-2008), and wrote a monthly column for The Sydney Review (1999-1996). He is the author of Art in Australia: from Colonization to Postmodernism (1997), French Painting in the Golden Age (2003), and Charles-Alphonse Dufresnoy, De Arte Graphica (translation and commentary, 2005). He has given numerous lectures and talks, and taught art history and theory at the National Art School (1997-2008). He has been the National Art Critic for The Australian since 2008, and Head of Art at Sydney Grammar School since 2009.
