Janet Dora Hine (1925-2012) was the only child of Arthur and Violet Hine. She attended North Sydney Girls High School and in 1941 commenced her 41 year career with the Public Library (later State Library) of NSW. While working as a library assistant she studied part-time at the University of Sydney, graduating in 1947 with a Bachelor of Arts degree with 2nd class honours in English and 3rd class honours in Philosophy. In 1950 Hine was appointed Librarian, working in the Mitchell Library and then the Cataloguing Department, while also lecturing and setting examinations in librarianship. After a three year stint in London as the Library Liaison Officer for the Agent-General of NSW, Hine returned to Sydney in 1957, becoming Dixson Librarian in 1958 and then moving to the Cataloguing Department, becoming Head Cataloguer in 1966. With a commitment to professional standards of cataloguing, Hine was a member of various cataloguing groups and a contributor to journals, conferences and seminars. An interest in indexing on a freelance basis continued after her retirement in 1982, with many books and periodicals indexed, while other writings include entries for the Australian Dictionary of Biography.
