Clover Moore, teacher and parliamentarian, is the daughter of Francis and Kathleen Collins. She was educated at Loreto, Kirribilli, and the University of Sydney where she graduated Bachelor of Arts and Diploma of Education. Moore taught at St. Ives High School, and after five years in London returned to Australia and settled in Redfern. She was elected to South Sydney Council as an independent alderman in 1980. South Sydney Council was amalgamated with the Sydney City Council in 1981 and Moore remained an alderman until 1987. In 1988, Moore stood for the inner city seat of Bligh where she defeated sitting Liberal member Michael Yabsley in a close electoral race, resulting in her election as an Independent Member of the NSW Legislative Assembly. Since 1988, Clover Moore has increased her primary vote with her particular focus on the community, social justice, participatory democracy and her involvement with local resident action groups. In 2004, the Carr government amalgamated the South Sydney Council and the City of Sydney Councils, which prompted Clover Moore to run successfully for the position of Lord Mayor of the City of Sydney while retaining the seat of Bligh.
