  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Australian Social Welfare Union [ASWU], a federally registered industrial organisation affiliated with the ACTU, was formed in October 1976 when it was resolved by the Federal Council of the Australian Association of Social Workers [AASW] that the welfare union and professional social work functions be separated into two organisations. This resolution was made after a conflict of opinion concerning eligibility for AASW membership was put to a plebiscite of members. The AASW retained its eligibility requirements of an accredited social work education and its role of providing and promoting professional competencies and standards. The ASWU represents non-government social and community services employees and is open to those who have completed an education programme which prepares them for such employment. The role of the ASWU is to look after the industrial welfare of its membership primarily by seeking award coverage, and to influence policy and participate in community debate of social welfare issues. This collection includes pre 1976 records of the AASW, mainly concerning industrial matters. Other AASW records held by the Library are located at ML MSS 3023 and ADD ONS.
