  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Alexander (Sandy) Turnbull Yarwood (1927-2002), historian and author, was born in Ryde, NSW. Educated at Sydney University (BA Hons, 1949; Dip Ed, 1950; MA Hons, 1962), his first academic appointment was in the History Department, University of NSW, in 1957. From 1969-1981 he taught at the University of New England, retiring as an Associate Professor. Yarwood's books include Asian migration to Australia (1964), Samuel Marsden : the great survivor (1977), Race relations in Australia (1982), Walers : Australian horses abroad (1989) and From a chair in the sun : the life of Ethel Turner (1994). He wrote shorter works in local history devoted to Albert Shire in Queensland and Mosman in Sydney. Yarwood regularly reviewed for The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Australian.
