The Institutions of Engineers Australia was formed in 1919 by the amalgamation of ten societies, the two local societies being the Engineering Association of NSW and the Sydney University Engineering Society. Many of the operations were the responsibility of geographical divisions. The Sydney Division commenced operations in January 1920.
The Engineering Excellence Awards is an annual event designed to recognize levels of engineering achievement and innovation across all sectors and disciplines engaged in and associated with the engineering profession. Excellence in engineering is measured by achieved balance between technical solutions and social, environmental and resource consideration. It is determined by technical innovation, commercial realism, organization and management applied for the benefit of the people.
The Engineering Excellence Awards are judged on a comparative basis within categories of Engineering Innovation, Engineering for Training and Process, Project Management, Project Development – Infrastructure and Building and Resources, International Projects and Exports, Products and Manufacturing, Maintenance Management, Environment, Heritage, Engineering for Small Communities, Welfare, Health and Safety
