  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Greig Pickhaver was born in Adelaide in 1948. After studying arts and drama at Flinders University he moved to Melbourne and joined the Australian Performing Group (APG) at the Pram Factory in Carlton. His career in radio began in the mid 1970s at the community station 3CR where he presented 'Radio on the Run'. He then went on to present various radio programs on 3RRR combining music, popular culture, sport and humour, including the 1979 radio documentary 'Chocabloc: a history of Australian rock and pop music, 1956-1976'. Pickhaver researched and produced the program with the assistance of a grant from the Creative Development Branch of the Australian Film Commission, and recorded over 50 hours of interviews with key figures in the Australian music industry. In the early 1980s he presented 'Good Morning Sports' and commentaries for the VFL grand finals, a one day cricket match between Australia and New Zealand in 1981 and the Victorian state election in 1982.
Pickhaver commenced broadcasting on ABC radio station Triple J in Sydney in 1985 with a half-hour program on Friday mornings: the satirical sports show 'We Was Wrobbed' which evolved into 'This Sporting Life (TSL)' with Pickhaver as HG Nelson and John Doyle as Roy Slaven. Their inaugural call of the rugby league grand final on Triple J in 1986 was a popular and critical success and 'TSL' was moved to Saturday afternoons where it quickly gained a large audience. Their book 'Pants off, this sporting life' was published by ABC Enterprises in 1989. Roy & HG's first foray into television was on the ABC program 'Blah Blah Blah' presented by Andrew Denton in 1988, and Pickhaver (as HG Nelson) was also a regular guest on television shows on channels 7 and 9 in the late 1980s. Pickhaver and Doyle won the Australian Writers' Guild award (AWGIE) for comedy in 1989 and 1990.
