Joseph John Scoffin was born on 16 November 1880 to Henry Scoffin and Ellen Scoffin in Beverly, Yorkshire, UK. He worked for the railways as a fitter and left in 1910, presumably to come to Australia. Scoffin was on the ‘Orontes’ departing the UK on 4 Aug 1911 and arriving in Freemantle, WA on 5 Sept. 1911. He is classed as an Engineer in the arrivals listing. In 1912, Scoffin married Bertha Tipping in Brompton, South Australia and they had a son Alfred in 1913 and another son, Bertram in 1920, by which time they had moved to Sydney. He was a Commonwealth Councilman in the Amalgamated Engineering Union. Scoffin died in 1930 in Sydney.
