  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Zoological Gardens at Moore Park (also known as Sydney Zoo or Moore Park Zoo) were opened in 1884 and operated on that site until 1916. Employees and animals were then transferred to Taronga Zoo, located in Mosman.

Quong Tart (1850-1903) was a prominent Chinese tea merchant and restaurateur, opening a series of popular teahouses in Sydney. By 1885 Tart had opened four venues including the Pavilion at the Zoological Gardens.

Charles Bayliss (1850-1897) was a prominent Australian photographer of the 19th century. Initially he was apprenticed to Beaufoy Merlin, with whom he formed the American and Australasian Photographic Company (A&A Photographic Company). He then worked for B.O. Holtermann from 1873 to 1875 before working independently from 1876 until his death.
