  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Edward Davis was a topographical painter and naval officer of the British Antarctic expedition, 1839-1843, commanded by Sir James Clark Ross. Davis was second officer under Captain Francis Crozier on the HMS Terror.

    Watercolour of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror sailing around small icebergs in front of Beaufort or Franklin Island, Antarctica. Mount Erebus vents smoke in the background left side. "'Franklin Island' Erebus and Terror 1841" written in ink on mount and typed dealer's label attached on the reverse.
