Sir Patrick Gordon Taylor was born on 21 October 1896 in Sydney. In 1916, he was commissioned in the Royal Flying Corps in Britain and was promoted to captain. He served in both the First and Second World Wars and was second pilot and navigator to Sir Charles Kingsford Smith on his 1933, 1934 and 1935 flights between Australia and New Zealand. In 1939, he made the first flight across the Indian Ocean. He was knighted in 1954 and died in Honolulu, Hawaii on 15 December 1966.

The donor was married to the late Genevieve Kirton, daughter of P. G. Taylor.

81 first day covers collected by aviator Sir Patrick Gordon Taylor commemorating his and Sir Charles Kingsford Smith's flights across the Pacific, Australia, Britain and South America. Many items are addressed to Taylor or to Ernest Crome, an Australian aviation collector and philatelist. Represented are stamps from Australia, New Zealand, United States, Canada, Mexico, Fiji, Gilbert and Ellis Islands, New Caledonia, Hong Kong and various other Pacific nations.
