  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Clarence Frank Mills was born in Sydney on 31 January 1893. He followed his father into a career in surveying, visiting British New Guinea in 1911 and 1912, after which he passed his surveyors exam. He served in World War I in Gallipoli, Egypt (where he earned the nickname of ‘Toby’) and then Poziers. In 1918 he returned to London and was assigned to the ‘Dunsterforce’ mission led by Major-General L. C. Dunsterville. Returning to New South Wales in August 1919, Mills became the the Assistant Surveyor in Armidale, NSW. Mills then settled in New Lambton, NSW with his wife Jenny and their five children. He continued to work in the area as a commercial and development surveyor, and also surveying work for the NSW Crippled Children’s Association. A street in Cessnock is named in his honour. Clarence Mills died in November 1970.
