  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Allen Strom (1915-1997) was an educator, conservationist, naturalist and administrator. During the 1950s he was an education officer at the Australian Museum. He was a member of the Caloola Club (founded in 1945 to foster a love of wildernesses and encourage nature conservation) and foundation secretary of the National Parks Association of NSW. From 1958 to 1967, he served as the Chief Guardian of Fauna on the Fauna Protection Panel prior to the establishment of the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NP&WS). He was also a member of the Nature Conservation Council. From 1967 until his retirement he worked in the Department of Education as the Advisor in Conservation. He was awarded the Australian Natural History Medallion for ‘special study and for increasing knowledge and appreciation of natural history in Australia’ in 1972, and with an Order of Australia for his services to conservation education in 1977.

Allan Fox was an environmental writer and photographer who was mentored by Allen Strom. Fox used Strom’s papers to write a biography of him.
