Michael Schlieper (1947-2015) was born in the Bavarian town of Brannenburg, emigrating to Australia with his family when he was 10. After finishing high school, he spent time at the Telegraph as a copy boy and cadet journalist in the racing section, sparking a lifelong interest in horse racing. He later enrolled at the Alexander Mackie College, graduating with a Diploma of Education.

A largely self-taught artist, his first solo exhibition was held in 1974 at the Holdsworth Galleries, Sydney. Between 1974 and 2009 he regularly exhibited at galleries including Holdsworth Galleries, Rex Irwin Gallery, and Charles Hewitt Gallery. His works are held in public collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, Legislative Council of N.S.W., Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, and Sir Hermann Black Gallery at The University of Sydney. Diagnosed with Fronto-temporal dementia in 2007, he produced his last exhibition in 2009.
