  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Idris Charles (Charlie) Pike enlisted at Liverpool, New South Wales, at the age of nineteen in March 1915, (service number 421). He gave his profession as cabinet maker and was living in Leichhardt, Sydney. Charlie Pike served in the 17th battalion, a NSW battalion raised in 1915 for overseas service as part of the Australian Imperial Force. The Battalion was sent to Egypt initially, before taking part in the fighting at Gallipoli. The battalion was then sent to the Western Front in France and Belgium, where it served in the trenches as part of the Australian Corps. In October 1916 Pike was promoted to lance corporal, then corporal. In early 1917 he was promoted to temporary sergeant, then sergeant in March 1917, and attended training courses in England during this period. Pike survived the war and returned to Sydney in April 1919. He married Violet Clapson in 1920. Charlie Pike died on 28 July 1949.

  • Scope and Content
    The collection comprises World War I material relating to Idris Charles (Charlie) Pike, including approximately 160 letters written by Pike to Violet Clapson throughout his war service. Also includes photographic prints of Violet and Charlie, cards and postcards, war ephemera and a silk embroidered souvenir from Egypt.
