  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

'The Best Cat, Est Cat' is a book about the State Library of New South Wales and its rich collections, with reference to Trim, the famous ship's cat who accompanied Matthew Flinders on his voyages to circumnavigate and map the coastline of Australia in 1801–03. The book is a collaboration between the Library and NSW based writer Libby Hathorn. It is the first picture book to be published about the Library by the Library.
The book’s illustrator, Rosie Handley is a graphic designer at the State Library of NSW. Handley’s artworks imaginatively capture the essence of the Library and also feature some of the Library’s most significant and recognisable collection items. Handley studied at the College of Fine Arts and has worked in Sydney as a designer for over 20 years. She has won multiple awards for her design work, including an International Design and Communications Award (IDCA) in exhibition branding, and Museums Australia Publications and Design Awards (MAPDA) for exhibition branding, invitation design and magazine design. She has exhibited her artwork in several local art exhibitions and was a finalist in the Sydney Northern Beaches Art prize in 2020. 'The Best Cat' will be her first published book.
Libby Hathorn (b. 1943) is an award-winning NSW children’s book author who lives and works in Sydney. She has written over 50 books for children and young people, including numerous picture books such as 'The Tram to Bondi Beach', 'Incredabilia', 'A Soldier, a dog and a boy' and 'Miss Franklin How Miles Franklin’s brilliant career began'.
'The Best Cat' is being published by the Library in July 2021
