  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The building was originally built in 1939 by Samuel Lipson for S. Hoffnung & Co. Ltd., and then redeveloped in 1972-1974 by Public Works Dept and architects Lipson, Kaad & Fotheringham for the exclusive use of the Australian Red Cross Society, as their main administrative offices and central blood transfusion centre. The Red Cross occupied the building for over 30 years, until 2011. The building is listed on the NSW State Heritage Inventory.

  • Collection history
    Plans were located in office at Macquarie Hospital, which was kept as old plan room for the Public Works Department.
  • Scope and Content
    12 plans titled "Proposed development for the Australian Red Cross Society (NSW Division) 153-159 Clarence St. Sydney". Consists of plans for each level of the building, from lower basement to rooftop level, depicting blood collection and biochemistry laboratories, staff and administrative offices, welfare and social work, fundraising and accounts, handicrafts department, storage and dispatch.
