  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Hay camp internees were not allowed to hold Australian currency, so they decided to devise their own money and banking system. George Adams (formerly Teltscher) designed intricate sixpence, one shilling and two-shilling notes with the approval of the camp commandant and the support of The Riverine Grazier newspaper and the Hay branch of the Commonwealth Bank. Australian officials determined that the banknotes were illegal and an order was placed for them to be destroyed.
