    Henry Chamberlain Russell was an astronomer and meteorologist who joined the Sydney Observatory and became acting director in 1862-64, before becoming government astronomer in 1870. In 1875 he presented his transit of Venus observations to the Royal Astronomical Society in England, meeting many leading astronomers and technicians. He undertook systematic work on star positions and established many meteorological and weather stations in New South Wales.

    37 handwritten letters and invitation in ink. Includes: meeting invitations, letters from local amateur and professional scientists and letters from prominent English astronomers and scientists associated with Russell's visit to the Royal Astronomical Society in England, 1875. Correspondents include Heinrich Daniel Ruhmkorff, Richard A. Proctor, Sir William Montagu Manning, Sir Henry Wylie Norman, Governor of Queensland; John Russell Hind, Superintendent of the Nautical Almanac; George Biddell Airy, Astronomer Royal and others.
