  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Joseph Banks (1743-1820), naturalist and botanist, accompanied Captain James Cook on his first voyage to the Pacific and Australia on HMB Endeavour. In 1788 Banks was elected President of the Royal Society, a position he held for over 40 years. Banks was actively involved in almost every aspect of 18th century Pacific exploration and early settlement of Australia.

    John Russell (1745-1806), artist, amateur astronomer and literary scholar, was retained as a painter to George III.

    Joseph Collyer (1748-1827) studied under Anthony Walker and worked for John Boydell. He enrolled at the Royal Academy in 1791 and became an associate of the academy in 1786. He was a portrait engraver to Queen Charlotte.
