    Captain John Coghlan Fitzgerald, R.N. (1803-1859) entered the navy, 1818 and was promoted to captain, 1841. In 1845 he was appointed Captain of HMS Vernon to the south east coast of America and later in the East Indies. In 1853 he was appointed Captain of HMS Winchester, in the East Indies. He was transferred to the HMS Calliope in 1854, on the Australian Station and returned to England, 1855.

  • Scope and Content
    Small quarto, original half vellum over marbled board volume, handwritten in ink. Fitzgerald's naval log details his voyage to the East Indies and China on HMS Vernon, passing through Cape of Good Hope - Singapore - Penang - Singapore - Hong Kong - Amoy - Hong Kong - Manila - Labuan - Singapore - Madras - Trincomalee - Bombay - St Helena - England, 1847-1848. The second section details his voyage from Madras - Singapore - Labuan as captain of HMS Winchester, 1854.

    The final section details Fitzgerald's voyage from Moreton Bay - Port Curtis - Lord Howe Island - Port Jackson - Botany Bay - Broken Bay - Port Stephens - Port Phillip - Rio de Janeiro - England, 1854. Included is a newspaper clipping titled, 'Perilous situation of the ship Medway among icebergs', 2 August 1854.
