- Scope and ContentOn New Year’s Eve 2019 a massive bushfire tore through the Conjola area on the South Coast of New South Wales, destroying 89 homes and killing three people. Peter Dunn, a Conjola local, describes in detail the events leading up to this catastrophic fire, and the efforts to save homes around Lake Conjola. Following the fire, Peter was asked to help organise a community-led recovery effort and is now the Coordinator for Conjola Recovery Centre. He speaks of the challenges the community faced in the immediate aftermath of the fire, including the evacuation of tourists from their campsites, mental health care for those who lost their properties, and dealing with sewage and rubbish in an area that was cut off from basic services. He also talks about the volunteer help from the wider community, and the further issues faced when the area flooded due to heavy rains only a month after the fires. Peter also reflects on the impact of the coronavirus health crisis on the community, industry, and tourism in the recovering bushfire-affected areas.
