  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Arthur John Newstead was born in Middlesex, England in 1859 to Ann and William Newstead. He married Lucy Edith Buckley in Yorkshire in March 1884 and worked as an auctioneer. They arrived in Australia on the Windsor Castle on 13th June 1884. Living on the lower north shore of Sydney they had two children, Edith May and John Wrench. Arthur was appointed a magistrate in 1900. Lucy Edith passed away in 1921 and Arthur remarried Elfreda Walker in 1923. In his later years he resided in Glenbrook and died on 9th of February 1947.

  • Scope and Content
    Quarto scrapbook, original vellum with ink ruling to boards with marbled endpapers. Mounted into the book are theatrical and musical programs, news announcements for plays and concerts, special event invitations and menus, newspaper clippings pertaining to current events and the obituaries of prominent people in the arts. The volume includes theatre programs for the Criterion Theatre, Lyceum Theatre, Her Majesty's Theatre and the Tivoli Theatre. Music programs include ones for The Sydney Philharmonic Orchestra, The Sydney Liedertafel, organ recitals at the Town Hall and concerts at the Imperial Opera House. Also contained in the volume is a program for Sydney's Lumiere Cinematographe, one of the first venues to screen moving pictures.
