In 2012, the NSW State government announced a commitment to build a $1.6 billion Light Rail line from Circular Quay down George Street to Central Station, then across to Moore Park and down Anzac Parade to the south-eastern suburbs of Randwick and Kingsford.

Work on this project began in October 2015 resulting in the closure of parts of George Street and the re-routing of many bus paths. Buses were diverted from George Street on to other streets in the CBD, including Elizabeth, Castlereagh, Park, Druitt, Clarence and York Streets.
