  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Tichborne case was a widely-publicised legal case in the 19th century. Lady Tichborne commissioned a world wide advertisement to locate her missing son, Roger Tichborne. Thomas Castro, a butcher from Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, originally Arthur Orton (1834-1898) of Wapping London, responded to the advertisement claiming to be Tichborne. In 1871, Orton was trialled to establish his identity. His claim as Tichborne was rejected and Orton was charged with perjury and sentenced to 14 years' gaol in 1874.
