  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Tony Rafty (1915-2015) was a caricaturist, cartoonist, illustrator, journalist and cartoon historian. Born Anthony Raftopoulos in Paddington, Sydney, the son of Greek migrants, he was educated at Rose Bay Public School, then Central Technical College at Broadway. He became a golfing caddie with his brother Stan, until his first career job as cartoonist in 1939 with The Referee, a stablemate of Smith's Weekly. In 1940, he joined Sun Associated Newspapers group as creative cartoonist. During the war he enlisted in the AIF and was assigned to New Guinea as war artist and correspondent until he was discharged unfit with malaria in 1945.

From Singapore, he rejoined Associated Newspapers and was assigned to Indonesia to cover President Sukarno's War of Independence. Freelancing from 1957 to 1962 Rafty then rejoined the Sun and Sun-Herald as cartoonist, illustrator and sporting cartoonist, remaining until 1981.

A noted cartoon historian, Rafty organised the exhibition Fifty Years of Australian Cartooning at the Sydney Journalists’ Club in 1964. Rafty was one of the founding members of the Australian Black and White Artists Club and served as its president. He was also on the Board of Directors of the Sydney Journalists Club for 23 years, where he also held the position of President. He served on the Australian War Correspondents’ Association, and for many years, led the Australian War Correspondents Society veterans at the Anzac Day march.

Awarded an Order of Australia for services to the media in 1991, Rafty claimed to have created about 20,000 drawings over half a century.

Tony Rafty was married to Shirley Morey for 66 years, with whom he had five children. He died at the age of 99 in 2015.
