  • Scope and Content
    In the first of four interviews, Sydney-born theatre, opera, film and television director, Neil Armfield, describes growing up in Concord, Sydney, and how his early involvement in theatre and music as a student at Homebush Boys High School led him to pursue a career in the performing arts. He discusses producing and acting with the Sydney University Dramatical Society in the early 1970s, his move to the Nimrod Theatre, Surry Hills as an associate director, his role in the evolution of the Belvoir Street Theatre, Sydney and his time with South Australia's Lighthouse Theatre.
    Neil also speaks at length about working with prominent Australian writers and actors including Patrick White, Louis Nowra and Geoffrey Rush and the challenges faced by theatre companies such as limited funds and internal politics.
