In the first of two interviews, Sydney-based actor and theatre director, John Bell describes his post-war upbringing in Maitland, New South Wales, his early fascination with the theatre, in particular Shakespeare, his time at Sydney University with fellow students Clive James and Germaine Greer and his eventual move from acting to directing after a successful stint in England with the Bristol Old Vic and the Royal Shakespeare Company. He speaks in detail about Australian theatre and culture during the 1960s and 1970s and explains how his career evolved from actor, to teacher, to theatre company co-founder when he, Ken Horler and Richard Wherrett established the Nimrod Theatre in Kings Cross, Sydney in 1970.
