  • Scope and Content
    Interviewed over two days, Sydney-born theatre director, Sandra Bates, speaks about her life and 30-year career as artistic director of the Ensemble Theatre, Kirribilli, New South Wales.

    In interview one, Sandra speaks about her childhood and education in Sydney, marriage and four children and her personal recollections of Hayes Gordon, the founder of the Ensemble Theatre in Kirribilli. She discusses the Australian theatre industry in the 1970s and 1980s, the motivations behind her move from actor to director and the issues faced by Australian theatre companies, from a lack of funding to changes in programming.

    In interview two, Sandra shares anecdotes about actors, plays and audience reactions at the Ensemble Theatre and discusses directing the works of Australian playwright David Williamson. Also discussed is running the allied Studios Rep Theatre at the Independent Theatre North Sydney from1983, women in theatre, and life after retirement.
