Preoccupying Louis de Freycinet for much of the remainder of his life following the return of the Uranie voyage was the planned, but never completed, study of the language of the Marianas, which he worked on in collaboration with the linguist Athanase Gros. The volume was anticipated from the earliest stages of the project, with the 'Recherches sur les langues' announced as part of the whole work on the title-page of the 'Historique', Volume 1, Part 1, first edition (1827). After Louis de Freycinet's death, the work was continued by Gros and Louis' nephew Louis René (Lodoïx) de Freycinet but the dictionary was never published.
