  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbian and Gay (PFLAG) NSW Inc. is a non-profit volunteer organisation which provides help, information and support to families and friends of LGBTQI individuals and advocates for the rights of the LGBTQI community. Its members have a common goal of keeping families together. PFLAG originated in the United States in 1973 and was founded in Australia in 1989 in Perth by June Smythe, Margaret and John Pugh, and Heather Horntvedt. Heather Horntvedt moved to Sydney in 1990 and established PFLAG Sydney, holding meetings in her home in Castle Hill. Formal meetings began in April 1992 and were held in Darlinghurst. PFLAG Western Sydney was also founded around this time. Members marched for the first time in the 1991 Sydney Mardis Gras and participation grew rapidly from then. The Sydney branch ceased, and its activities consolidated with PFLAG Western Sydney. In 1997, PFLAG Western Sydney became incorporated and in 2005 the name was officially changed to PFLAG NSW.
