    The 'Marchants Studio, Gawler' stamp on five photographs indicates a South Australian setting, possibly the military training camp at Gawler, which included bridge-building training exercises.

  • Scope and Content
    14 photographs showing the bridge-building exercises undertaken by a unit of field engineers training for service during World War 1. The collection comprises a small album containing nine photographs (7.0 × 11.4 cm), and five larger photographs on card mounts blind-stamped 'Marchants Studio, Gawler' (15.2 × 20.5 cm or smaller).

    The photographs show the construction of two bridges made from rough timbers, one bridge being a barrel pontoon. Some photographs show field engineers standing on the structures, possibly to demonstrate their strength. A formal group photograph is also included.
