Wykes Norton Jr was born in Maitland, New South Wales to Wykes and Elizabeth Norton. Starting out as a draper's assistant, he eventually made his living as a professional photographer in Sydney. In 1880 he married Ellen Chapman and they had five children together. He was the proprietor of the Royal Studio at 418 George Street from 1882-1885 and later the Popular Studio at 458 George Street from 1885 until his death on 9 December 1892 at age 52.
