  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

St Heliers, a large pastoral and agricultural property on the Hunter River near Muswellbrook, was established by Henry Dumaresq (1792-1838), who extended the estate during the 1830s by land grants and purchase to be approximately 13,000 acres in size. Henry was appointed commissioner of the Australian Agricultural Company in 1833, moving to Port Stephens the next year. He died at Tahlee House, Port Stephens, in March 1838, and was buried at St Heliers. His brother, William John Dumaresq (1793-1868), owned the near-by property of St Aubin’s, near Scone, an estate similar in size to St Heliers.

St Heliers was offered for sale in 1857 - “improvements” on the estate included a large family residence of eighteen apartments and extensive verandahs built of stone ; a General store ; Flour store ; 6-horse flour mill, with threshing machine ; large barn ; stables, with harness-room ; two large sheds for carts ; coach-house and lock-up ; large shearing shed with pens ; distillery and malting-house ; vineyard and flower gardens ; and labourers’ cottages.
