Isaac "Ike" Bates is a Kamilaroi/Gomeroi Elder, born on 17 February 1926 at Coonabarabran, New South Wales, to John Bates and Minnie Margaret Cain. Bates grew up in the bush at Nandi, near Coonabarabran. He played rugby league and cricket as a youth before following his father into shearing. Bates moved to Sydney aged 17. He joined the Redfern All Blacks rugby league team in 1945 and played for 10 years. The Redfern All Blacks were one of the first registered all-Aboriginal sides in NSW. In Sydney, Isaac worked as a meat carter and later joined Parramatta City Council as a driver and labourer.

Michael Bennett is a historian specialising in Indigenous community histories in NSW. Bennett was senior researcher and media officer for NTSCorp, assisting native title claimants. He has also been the communications officer for the NSW Aboriginal Land Council.
