  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Neville (known as) Jack Hampton was born in Sydney in 1942 to Thomas Hampton (an Aboriginal man from Wollongong) and Beryl Wellington (an Aboriginal woman with family connections to Sydney and the Manning River). His parents separated soon after Jack was born and he was then raised by Beryl and Thomas Dixon, an Aboriginal man with strong ties to Coolangatta on the lower Shoalhaven River. The family lived at La Perouse, just outside the mission in a house made from scrap iron and timber. After completing school, Jack worked in a series of jobs before marrying Eileen Thomas, moving to the Jervis Bay region and raising three children. After working in the local botanical gardens, Jack became one of the first Aboriginal rangers in what became Booderee National Park at Jervis Bay. He later completed a diploma and degree in Adult Education at the University of Technology, Sydney, and went to work as a careers advisor and consultant for several organisations, including the Wesleyan Uniting Church. In 2005, Jack was elected as a Councillor with the NSWALC, a position he held until retirement in 2015.

Michael Bennett is a historian specialising in Indigenous community histories in New South Wales. Bennett was senior researcher and media officer for NTSCorp, assisting native title claimants. He has also been the communications officer for the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council.
