    John (Jack) Laidley Mort was born on 12 July 1886, the son of James Laidley Mort and Mary Joesphine Coveny, at the residence 'Brou' in Bodalla, NSW. He was the grandson of colonial businessman and entrepreneur Thomas Sutcliffe Mort (1816-1878) who established Mort's Dock and Mort & Co. in Sydney, and the Bodalla estate on the NSW South Coast.

  • Scope and Content
    The collection comprises two handwritten volumes being the memoirs of John (Jack) Laidley Mort, accompanied by a typed transcript; one handwritten volume on 'Brou', the Mort family property at Bodalla, NSW, compiled by John Laidley Mort and his son, Charles Mort; and loose handwritten family history notes.

    In the memoirs, which John (Jack) Laidley Mort started compiling in 1936, he recounts his early life and activities. He describes early memories of his father James Laidley Mort, and Greenoaks, Darling Point; his childhood spent at 'Brou'; details of the house, gardens and surrounding area; his school days and university life, and general family recollections. The memoirs include original photographs (pasted in), dated from ca. 1873, of family members and scenes of Mort family properties.
