  • Scope and Content
'Australia’s First Real Building: Governor Arthur Phillip’s Portable House, Sydney Cove, 1788' investigates the portable canvas house that Phillip moved into in Sydney in February 1788, on the eastern side of what was to become known as the Tank Stream. A prefabricated dwelling of timber-framed panels covered with oilcloth, it cost £130 and measured forty-five feet long, 17 feet 6 inches wide, and 8 feet high (13.7 x 5.3 x 2.4 metres). The house kit, manufactured in London in 1786 by the firm Smith & Baber, was brought on the first fleet and assembled to serve as a residence for Governor Phillip until the first government house was erected.
