The same sex marriage survey of 2017 was a pivotal event for the LGBTI community in Australia. Apart from consequent legal recognition, it marked a measurable shift in community attitudes towards LGBTI people and their issues. On 15 November 2017, the Australian Bureau of Statistics announced the results of the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey. A total of 12.7 million (79.5%) of eligible Australians expressed their view, with the majority (61.6%) indicating that the law should be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry. All states and territories recorded a majority 'Yes' response.
Australian Marriage Equality was the principal LGTBI organisation associated with the campaign, and the campaign material they produced provides an important record of the ways in which public opinion was influenced, in support of marriage-equality, in NSW.
