Maugham wrote this letter in response to a letter he had received from Lindsay, who recalled a comment Maugham had made during a visit to Sydney in 1921 that Australian artists were strangely timid, that they were 'riding their souls in trams'. By the same post, Lindsay had sent Maugham a copy of Douglas Stewart’s play Ned Kelly for his comments.

  • Scope and Content
Typescript letter from William Somerset Maugham to Norman Lindsay, on letterhead, Parkers Ferry, Yemasee [sic], South Carolina, 30 March 1943.
Maugham thanks Lindsay for his letter, notes that he had 'forgotten the message to Australia that you remind me of ...', and says he is doubtful that the play [Douglas Stewart's Ned Kelly] will arrive because of the great distance between them. He assures Lindsay that if the play does turn up he will read it, and thanks him for taking the trouble to send it.
