Published in Sydney, by Art in Australia Ltd (1920-34), and later by John Fairfax & Sons (1935-42), The Home: the Australian Journal of Quality was the first locally-produced women’s magazine to emulate international society magazines of the type published by the prominent Conde Nast stable. Publisher Sydney Ure Smith (1887-1949) launched this prestigious and trend-setting quarterly publication in 1920, with Bertram Stevens as inaugural editor, later assuming co-editorship with Leon Gellert from 1922.

A set of seven issues of the Australian periodical, The Home: the Australian Journal of Quality, vol. 13, nos. 7-12, 1932, including The Home Annual (October, 1932), contemporaneously bound in red buckram with gilt title on spine. The manuscript annotations on each page detail payments made to advertising agencies, including fees and commissions as brokered by the magazine’s advertising managers H.W Kingham and ‘Miss’ (Florence) Lane, and various contributors such as authors, artists, photographers, graphic designers, models and styling.
