    George Whitfield (1808-1864), a gunsmith and taxidermist, was born in Belfast, Ireland, arriving in Sydney on board the Princess Victoria in February 1834. On 4 November 1864 Whitfield was shot dead at the door of his shop by Patrick McGlinn, a former employee.

    Robert James Tennent (1803-1880) was an Irish Whig politician. He was the eldest son of Robert Tennent MD of Belfast.

  • Scope and Content
    A letter from Sydney gunsmith and taxidermist, George Whitfield, to Robert James Tennent of Belfast, Ireland, 8 October 1840. The letter concerns arrangements for the passage of Whitfield’s nephew, William John Whitfield, to Sydney. It is handwritten in ink on a folded sheet of gilt-edged writing paper and retains the original black, wax seal.
