    John (Jack) Chipperfield (b. 1923) started work as a nurse at the then Stockton Hospital in 1950. During his 31-year career he worked in male and female wards and in the Supervisor's office.

  • Scope and Content
    Oral history interview with Jack Chipperfield and Bessie Knox, conducted by Sue Andersen and transcribed by Susie Nelson-Smith. Jack Chipperfield talks about: his childhood at Salt Ash; starting work as a nurse at the Stockton Centre in 1950; working on the men's ward; the daily routine on the ward; his memories of some of the residents and other staff members; integrating the male and female wards; taking the residents out to buy shoes; working in the Supervisor's office; changing attitudes to hard work; the piggery. Bessie Knox assists Jack with some memories and talks about establishing Bridge Cottage and taking the children for walks on Saturday afternoons.
