    Elizabeth (Bessie) Mary Knox (1922-2022) lived in the same house in Stockton, New South Wales, all her life. In 1939, at the age of 17, she commenced work at the then Stockton Hospital, working on the switchboard for 6 weeks before starting as a pantry nurse. She spent her 41-year nursing career at the Stockton Centre, retiring from the Supervisor's office in 1980.

    Oral history with Bessie Knox, conducted by Sue Anderson and transcribed by Susie Nelson-Smith. Bessie Knox talks about: starting work at Stockton Centre at the age of 17; her work routine as a pantry nurse; her fond memories of some of the residents; nursing training; changes and improving conditions at the Centre over the years; Dr Kinna, the Medical Superintendent; the use of restraints and medication; the valuable assistance given by many of the residents in an understaffed workplace; refugees who worked at the Centre after World War II; taking the residents on bus trips; the pet dog and cat on her ward; residents moving into group homes; her promotion to the Supervisor's office; and her decision to retire after her 41-year career at the Centre.
