  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Friends of Callan Park (FOCP) was formed in 1998 as an open public organisation dedicated to saving all of Callan Park and maintaining an upgraded and relevant mental health hospital in the grounds. FOCP was instrumental in blocking a Government proposal to close the hospital and move patients to a new facility to be constructed at the Concord Hospital. To pay for this, the government recommended that 20% of the Callan Park site be sold to private developers for multi-storey private residential housing. In 2018 FCOP held a self-guided outdoor historic exhibition at Broughton Hall in the celebration of its 20th year of community activism, advocacy, and achievement.
Callan Park is situated at Iron Cove in Lilyfield. In 1839 the Crown Solicitor John Brenan acquired the land and built a residence there named Garry Owen House. He bought an additional three acres in 1841 and the following year built Broughton Hall. In 1873 the Government acquired both estates, now called Callan Park, in order to build a new lunatic asylum modelled on progressive asylums overseas. Twenty-two buildings were completed in 1885 and named the Kirkbride Block. This complex continued to be used for patients until 1994 when the last remaining services were transferred to other buildings in the grounds. In 1996 the Sydney College of the Arts took possession.
