  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

In 1976, a collection of 14 ethnographical and natural history drawings relating to Cook’s second and third voyages went on display in London. This previously unrecorded collection comprised both original drawings and late 18th century copies of works by, or after, John Webber, Georg Forster, and William Hodges, and was accompanied by an incomplete manuscript listing of the works, in German. Inscriptions, in German, on these copied works indicate they were produced, probably by an unknown German artist under George Forster’s direction and based on William Hodges drawings.

A printed catalogue of the works was published in 1979: 'Drawings from Captain Cook’s Voyages: an unrecorded collection of fourteen ethnographical and natural history drawings relating to the second and third voyages'. (London : Hartnoll & Eyre Ltd).

These two works are from this original collection of drawings, and listed as:
6(a). An old man of Tahiti / Unknown German Artist, probably after William Hodges (p.44-45).
    8. A native of New Caledonia / Unknown German Artist, after William Hodges (p.48-49).

William Hodges was the official artist on Cook's voyage and German Johann Forster and his son Georg Forster were naturalists onboard.
