‘Nestlé Write Around Australia’ was a program that encouraged creative writing among primary school students across Australia. The program was available to students in year 5 and 6 in New South Wales, ACT, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and Northern Territory, and to students in year 6 and 7 in Queensland and Western Australia.

Coordinated by the State Library of New South Wales, the program was hosted and supported by state and public libraries in metropolitan and regional zones throughout the country.

To enter the program, students wrote a 500-word original story and submitted it for evaluation to a judging panel in their respective zone. Per zone, 20 finalists (10 from each year) were selected. The finalists were invited to take part in a creative writing workshop led by a well-known Australian children's book author. Afterwards, finalists got the opportunity to revise their story or write a new one for a second round of judging, from which winners were selected at zone, state/territory, and national level. Altogether, there were 20 finalists per zone, 2 winners per zone, 2 winners per state/territory and 2 national winners (1 from each school year). The stories of the sixteen state/territory winners, including the two national winners, were published in a story collection.

This collection comprises 41 competition entries (photocopies) for 'Nestlé Write Around Australia', 1999 and 2000.

Each competition entry consists of a submitted story (predominantly typescript) and a filled-out entry form. Due to the photocopied nature of the material, the majority of the entries has the top section of the first story page covered over by the entry form.
