  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Manly Amateur Swimming Club (M.S.C.) was formed in 1905. By 1926 it was the largest swimming club in the Sydney metropolitan area. Club members who were prominent at national and international competitions include Andrew 'Boy' Charlton, Dick Eve, Ernest Henry, Goya Henry, Billy Herald and Noel Ryan.

    Kenneth W. ('Kenny') Watson held the roles of Honorary Press and Race Secretary of the Manly Amateur Swimming Club and Captain, President and Honorary Secretary of the Manly Life Saving Club. He was a life member of both clubs.

    Letter accompanying the scrapbooks states that they are from the collection of Mr Ken Watson and Mr and Mrs Bill and May Williams, all former officials of the Manly Amateur Swimming Club
  • Scope and Content
    Five scrapbooks documenting the activities of the Manly Amateur Swimming Club (MSC) and also the achievements of local and international swimmers, divers and surfers in men's, ladies' and children's events, and Australian and international swimming and surf carnivals and competitions including the Olympic Games. The scrapbooks largely comprise press clippings from a range of Sydney newspapers including the Manly Daily, Daily Guardian, Sun, Truth and Daily Telegraph, along with some MSC programs and other publications. Also included is a loose photographic print, mounted on board, of an unidentified schoolgirl hockey team.

    1. Scrapbook, November 1914-March 1925. Subjects include: Tommy Adrian's defeat of Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku (January 1915); junior swimmers Andrew 'Boy' Charlton and Dick Eve; Australian participation in the 1916 Antwerp and 1924 Paris Olympic Games
