German-born Klaus Hueneke was a former plant ecologist who developed a passion for the Australian Alps and high country from an early age. A keen skier and bushwalker, he began photographing the area in the mid-1970s building a photographic portfolio that spans decades of ecological change. He also compiled oral history interviews with the local ‘old timers’ who lived and worked there. In 1982, ANU Press published his ‘Huts of the High Country’ which documented the history of more than 100 huts and homesteads in the Snowy Mountains. He later set up his own publishing company Tabletop Press, continuing to produced books on the area. In 2012, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for services to conservation and Australia’s alpine heritage.

9 ring binder folders in 4 boxes containing approximately 18,000 negatives in uncut strips, held within numbered sheets, with accompanying A4 contact or proof sheets. The majority of negatives are black and white 35mm, with a small proportion of black and white 6 X 6 cm medium format. The negatives are identified with captions, and handwritten contents listings provided by Hueneke. Some negatives have been removed from the original listings, leaving gaps in the numbering sequence.

Folder 1. 6x6 cm negatives and A4 contact sheets, 1973-1977. Photographs include Klause Hueneke, huts, Ski tours, Snowy Mountains, Canberra and family. Huts include: Mawsons, Valentine, Cootapat, Broken Dam, Kiandra Country, Delaneys, Boltons, Brooks, Four Mile, Moulds and Kellys Hut. Also included: Yans Store, Elaine Mine, Horse Ride, Bill Hughes, and Lorna Doone.

Folder 2. Sheets 1-35 of 35mm negatives and A4 contact sheets, 1977-1979, with handwritten contents listing by Klaus Hueneke. Photographs include eight day ski tour from Kiandra to Guthega, 1977, Kiandra to Kosciusko, 1977, Zoo at Bungendore, Captains Flat mine buildings, Elaine Mine, Igloo building, and Boobee hut restoration.

Folder 3. Sheets 36-69 of 35mm negatives, 1979-1980, and A4 contact sheets, with handwritten contents listing by Klaus Hueneke. Photographs include snow caves at Mt Carruthers, Four Mile Hut restoration, Stockman Dick Power and Mt Franklin Chalet.
